THE LOCAL AREA
Bridlington is a popular East Yorkshire seaside resort famous for being Europe’s largest lobster port, its historic12th-century harbour, and expansive sandy beaches. It is renowned for RSPB Bempton Cliffs birdwatching, the entertainment venue Bridlington Spa, and its role as a traditional family holiday destination.
Bridlington Old Town’s history centres on its medieval Augustinian Priory, founded 1113, with the surviving Bayle Gate (1388) and Priory Church nave forming its core, while the High Street’s Georgian/Victorian buildings grew from its market roots, shifting focus from the harbour as the seaside resort developed, retaining a unique historic atmosphere, famously used for filming Dad’s Arm.
The medieval Old Town is a quiet, charming side full of fascinating architecture and cultural riches. So take time out of your hectic holidaying to explore it to the full. Mosey through the historic streets and alleyways and soak up the atmosphere as you head towards the Priory Church. It was way back in 1537 that Henry VIII took it upon himself to demolish the monastery here. At that time the town boasted one of the largest monasteries in the North of England. He did a pretty good job out of it, too, but thankfully the glorious nave still survives as the wonderful Priory church. Drop in and you’ll feel the air tremble with the past.
With your history head on, check out the hugely popular Bayle Museum. Dating back 800 years and once the gateway to the Priory, this Grade I listed building and scheduled ancient monument today features computerised games, listening posts and displays to explore.
Time for a spot of refreshment? You’ll be spoilt for choice. Try the Georgian Tea Rooms where you can order a scrumptious Yorkshire high tea or a full meal hand cooked on the premises. Then there are the comfy pubs serving home prepared dishes packed with local produce.
Raring to go again, dive into the antique shops and have a good old rummage – you never know your luck, you might turn up a bargain! And don’t forget to go gallery-hopping. You’ll find lots of top class galleries competing for your attention. Artists have always flocked to Bridlington, attracted by the wonderful light and the sense of history. Each gallery showcases beautiful items from paintings to ceramics and designer jewellery, and you’re always welcome to browse and chat about the works on display.
What you won’t see much of, we’re proud to say, are familiar national chains on our High Street. Instead, this special place is brimming with local, independent shops and boutiques. So if you fancy a little retail therapy, you’ll find this a shopping expedition unlike any other.
With many local attractions to enjoy on your doorstep to include:
- Largest Lobster Port in Europe: The town lands over 300 tonnes of shellfish annually, a cornerstone of its fishing industry.
- Historic Harbor & Beaches: A bustling, historic harbour serves as the town’s heart, flanked by popular North and South beaches.
- RSPB Bempton Cliffs: Located nearby, this is famous for hosting 200,000 seabirds, including puffins and gannets, in the spring and summer
- Bridlington Spa: A top entertainment venue hosting major music acts and comedians.
- Cultural & Historic Sites: Key attractions include the 900-year-old Priory Church, the Bayle Museum, and the nearby Sewerby Hall and Gardens.
